Vienne is a popular tourist town in southern France. It is just 20 miles south of Lyon and 125 miles north of Avignon. If you pick up a rental car in Vienne you’ll soon find that it stands on hills around the famous River Rhône, on either side of a bend in the river. Drivers will find that the roads are pretty good: the A7 motorway runs north to south through the western fringes of the town and there’s a good network of trunk roads in all directions. But note that there’s only one bridge over the Rhone in the town centre.
If you have a rental car in Vienne you’ll be able to tour the ancient Roman, early Christian and medieval sights - and you’ll be able to explore further afield too. For example, the Pilat Natural Park is in the wooded hills to the west and, of course, the city of Lyon is a short drive north. In Vienne itself you can see sights like the Roman temple and aqueducts, a 5th-century Romanesque church and a medieval gothic cathedral. It’s also a great town to wander, you’ll find most of the shops and restaurants on the east bank of the Rhône.
