Hertz in France

France is a republic led by a president and has a population of around 64 million people occupying its near 250,000 square miles. The climate ranges from typically northern European in Normandy and Brittany, to a more Mediterranean feel to the south and along the famous Côte D’Azur. The capital city is Paris, and other major population centres include Marseilles, Lyon, Toulouse and Rouen. The country is famous worldwide for its gastronomy as well as its fine wines made in areas like Bordeaux, and many visitors enjoy hiring a car in France to explore these capitals of good food.

Driving in and around France

While the capital, Paris, may seem to have the lion’s share of attractions with Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower and The Louvre to name but three, this huge country has a great deal more to offer to the visitor who’s hiring a car in France. For example northern France has a great many cities like Amiens and Caen with fine medieval architecture, while towards the west of France there are miles of sandy beaches around towns like La Rochelle. To the south, places like Cannes (also famous for its film festival), Nice and Antibes offer a taste of Mediterranean living that has been such a popular attraction ever since the 19th century.

A quick guide to France

In the past France has had a reputation for having a higher than average number of road traffic accidents, but in recent years significant steps have been taken to reduce the amount of incidents. As a result French police issue numerous on the spot fines for traffic violations including speeding offences. If you are caught speeding or not wearing a seatbelt, or are involved in any kind of accident, you will also be required to take a compulsory drugs test. There are also strict rules about passing cyclists. In built-up areas you must pass no closer than one metre and the distance is 1.5 metres in non-built-up areas.
