Today Nuremburg is a largely industrial city where companies like Adidas, Siemens and MAN have large headquarters, although it’s probably best known for its associations with the second world war. It is the second largest city in Bavaria after Munich, which is about an hour’s drive away if you rent a car in Nuremberg. Although much of the city was destroyed in the war, you can still visit many of its medieval buildings today, especially in the Altstadt area which is dominated by the Imperial Castle and enclosed by its original 13th century walls.
The city’s centre is the market place called the Hauptmarkt. There are different markets there almost every day with everything from craft to food stalls. It’s the perfect place to sample local delicacies like the Nuremburg bratwurst sausage and lebkuchen, a kind of gingerbread that is especially popular at Christmas time. Near to this, at a church called Frauenkirche, there is the famous clock. At noon every day when it strikes twelve, automata act out the Männleinlaufen which represents a procession in honour of the Holy Roman Emperor.
Renting a car in Nuremburg will also mean you can visit medieval Bayreuth, where composer Richard Wagner is celebrated in the annual festival.
