The Dutch town of Hoofddorp sits in the country’s province of North Holland, just 14 miles from Amsterdam. Hoofddorp is the capital of the municipality of Haarlemmermeer. The area was formerly a lake that was drained in 1853, becoming a settlement almost immediately after the land had dried. Not long after its creation, Hoofddorp was made part of Amsterdam’s defensive line, with Hoofddorp bij built for added protection. Today the city is spread out across the Haarlemmermeer, with the best way of getting around, by car. Car rental from Hoofddorp will mean you can easily explore the city, and its surrounding countryside.
Despite its relatively short history, Hoofddorp is now a sizeable town, home to over 73,000 residents and has plenty of things to do. To enjoy part of Hoofddorp’s heritage, pay a visit to De Eersteling, the first windmill built in the Haarlemmermeer. For a little spot of green space, visit De Heimanshof, and take in the city’s superb flora and fauna. Meanwhile, the town’s culture can be enjoyed with a show at the contemporary Schouwburg De Meerse Theatre. Meanwhile, the centre is home to a great selection of shops, based in a retail hub around Hoofdweg. To explore the sights outside of the centre, rent a car in Hoofddorp and visit the beautiful flower garden of Keukenhof 11 miles’ drive away.
