You’ll find the city of Bilbao spread between two mountain ranges on the north coast of Spain. San Sebastian is 60 miles to the east, Santander is 60 miles to the west, and Madrid is 250 miles south. If you rent a car in Bilbao, you’ll find that Spain’s fifth-largest city stands eight miles south of the shore of the Bay of Biscay, on both sides of a broad estuary of the River Nervion, which forms the Port of Bilbao. The airport is six miles to the north of the city on the east bank, and although Bilbao has a reputation as a major industrial centre, wooded mountain peaks rise up on both sides of the city.
Bilbao’s best-known landmark for visitors is the Guggenheim Museum, an acclaimed modern creation of American architect Frank Gehry. The spectacular curved titanium and glass shape houses a riverside art gallery. And, if you can tour Bilbao in a rental car, look out for the city’s Old Quarter. In this area you’ll discover a series of ancient churches, including the magnificent gothic St James Cathedral. Elsewhere don’t miss the surprisingly impressive collection of old masters at the Museum of Fine Arts standing in a grand park, the covered public walkways of the symmetrical 19th century Plaza Nueva or the panoramic city views from the heights of Mount Artxanda.
