The Spanish Balearic island is renowned for its easy-going atmosphere, a legacy of its days as a hippy retreat. And while that has more recently evolved in a livelier direction as Ibiza has become one of the world centres for dance clubs, there’s much more to the area than the nightlife. The capital, Ibiza Town, stands on the south coast, and is home to the impressive cathedral of Santa Maria d’Eivissa. The rest of the island, however, is much quieter, with a series of family beaches and secluded bays.
If you rent a car in Ibiza, it is a great island to explore. It’s small enough that you can’t get lost but big enough to allow you to discover all sorts of interesting sights. Ibiza Town and St Antoni have all the shops, bars, clubs and restaurants you’ll ever need. Ibiza Town also has a large natural harbour, lined with historic buildings, which is a World Heritage Site. Elsewhere, you’ll be able to tour the beaches and the unspoilt arid countryside. There are quiet white-washed villages here among the orchards and olive groves, many of them dating back to the time of Arab occupation.
