You’ll find the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands off the North West coast of Africa. The Canaries belong to Spain and are popular holiday destinations for Europeans, with Tenerife being the biggest and most populated of the four main islands. If you rent a car on Tenerife you’ll find it is roughly conical in shape, with a huge mountain in the centre. The volcano El Tieide is the highest mountain in Spain and acts as a natural windbreak for the island. North of the mountain is mostly lush rainforest, to the south the land is arid and the sun shines almost constantly on a series of major beach resorts.
With a rental car you can explore all of what Tenerife offers. It’s big enough to contain lots of varied attractions but small enough to drive right round in a day. The highlights include the volcanic El Teide landscape and the cable car almost to the summit. Elsewhere it’s worth exploring the historic streets of the old colonial city of La Laguna and the capital Santa Cruz with its landmark modern waterfront auditorium. The string of resorts along the south coast are lively but the island’s best beach is in the north, at Teracitas. It’s the only one that isn’t composed of black volcanic sand.
